William F. Bottke is the Executive Director of the Science Directorate at Southwest Research Institute’s Solar System Science and Exploration Division and the Director of NASA’s CLOE (Center for Lunar Origin and Evolution) within SSERVI. Dr. Bottke uses numerical simulations to study the formation, evolution, and bombardment history of our Solar System’s planets, satellites, and small bodies. He serves on the science teams of four NASA small body missions, OSIRIS-REx, Lucy, Psyche, and NEO Surveyor, and the UAE’s Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt. Born in Faribault, Minnesota, he earned his B.S. in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of Minnesota (1988) and a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona (1995). A Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Meteoritical Society, he has received accolades like the Paolo Farinella Prize. He has authored numerous high-impact publications, served as editor for Asteroids III and IV, and led previous SSERVI and Lunar Science Institute teams.
