About

Robert Citron is a planetary scientist specializing in geodynamics and how impacts, interior dynamics, and surface processes shape the evolution of planetary bodies. His research spans a wide range of topics, including the formation of Mars’ moons, geophysical evidence for early Martian oceans, the role of impacts in early Earth habitability, and planetary-scale asymmetries such as those observed on Mars and the Moon. His work combines numerical and analytical techniques to study the formation and evolution of large impact basins and planetary interiors and surfaces. He recently served on the South Pole-Aitken Basin Sample Return and Exploration (SPARX) Science Definition Team, and is PI on several NASA research grants. He earned his Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and held prior postdoctoral positions at NASA Goddard, UC Davis, and the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo. In 2014 he was a winter-over technician at the South Pole Telescope, and in 2023 he returned to Antarctica to participate in the Antarctic Search for Meteorites program.
