Maryame El Moutamid is a planetary scientist specializing in celestial mechanics, planetary rings, and satellite dynamics, with a focus on the Saturnian and Uranian system. She is a Lead Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado. Prior to joining SwRI, she spent a decade affiliated with Cornell University, where she worked extensively on outer solar system dynamics and Cassini-related research.
She earned her Ph.D. in planetary science from the Paris Observatory in 2013. Her research explores the dynamical evolution of planetary rings and moons, ring seismology, orbital resonances, tidal evolution, and the interactions between rings, satellites, and giant planets. Much of her recent work has centered on Uranus, including studies of its narrow rings, densely packed inner satellites, and the implications of these systems for the future Uranus Orbiter and Probe mission recommended by the Planetary Science Decadal Survey.
In 2025, El Moutamid led the discovery of a new small inner moon of Uranus, identified in JWST observations. Her work also examines how collisions, tidal migration, and ring–moon cycling shape the architecture of the Uranian satellite system.
Beyond Uranus, her research has included Saturn ring seismology, tesseral resonances, and comparative studies of planetary ring systems throughout the solar system.
