Joe Plowman

Sr. Research Analyst
Solar System Science and Exploration Division

About

Dr. Plowman studies the temperature and heating of the Solar Corona, including volumetric simulations of coronal heating. He is a leading expert on measurements of the temperature of coronal emission, having developed multiple methods to invert the corona’s emission measure distribution, as well as solar spectroscopy. He is developer of the pioneering CROBAR method to reconstruct three dimensional coronal structures from 2D coronal EUV images, and has a longstanding interest in high-dimensional underconstrained inverse problems. In addition, he has substantial experience with coronal and photospheric magnetography. Dr. Plowman received his Ph.D. in physics from Montana State University in 2010, with a dissertation on gravitational wave detection and population comparison of cosmological massive black holes.
