Craig E. DeForest is Director of the Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics. DeForest leads several space-mission and instrument development efforts, including the Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) that was developed and is now operated by SwRI. He is known for his work using imaging to probe various aspects of the Sun, solar corona, and solar wind, and for innovative data analysis methods. He helped pioneer now-familiar extreme-ultraviolet imaging of the Sun’s corona and, using the STEREO/HI heliospheric imagers, deep field imaging of the solar wind itself. He holds five patents on data processing algorithms and scientific instrumentation. DeForest is the former chair of the American Astronomical Society’s Solar Physics Division. He holds a B.A. in physics from Reed College, and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University.
