Abstract: Near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu is the target of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx sample return mission and has a complex history, including the ancient origins of its “parent body” which was catastrophically disrupted. Bennu, a rubble pile asteroid formed from fragments of this destroyed parent body, shows diverse geology including an ancient equatorial bulge, diverse boulders, variable craters, and a virtually strengthless surface. In this talk I will describe Bennu’s global geology as investigated by the OSIRIS-REx mission, discuss a recent investigation into Bennu’s boulder diversity by integrating albedo, morphology, and surface roughness, and present several predictions for the returned sample, which is scheduled to arrive on Sunday, September 24.
