Roiling in the deep: internal flows, seismology, and tides in stars and giant planets

In combination with sophisticated mathematical models and analysis, the data collected by new and upcoming telescopes and planetary science missions promise to revolutionize our understanding of internal processes in planets and stars. For example, seismic information carried by waves in Saturn’s rings is changing our understanding of giant planet structure, formation, and evolution. Tidal flows raised in Jupiter and Saturn similarly provide insight into planetary interiors and dynamics. Outside of our solar system, the interactions of exoplanets and stars both with each other and with their environments leave imprints in astronomical survey data. I will describe research focused on developing mathematical and computational models of planets, stars, and their interactions that capitalize on the opportunities and rise to the challenges presented by modern astronomical observations.
