Armed with a digital camera and some IDL code to put the images into
linked Web pages, I've constructed "virtual tours" of various
places. Each contains hundreds of linked images, which allow you to
conduct your own exploration of a real place. These were done before
Google Street View made the concept familiar, but will take you to
places even Google hasn't gone.
Also see On
the Road in North-West Scotland, by Frederik Ramm, which combines
images and GPS data to take you on a somewhat-similar (and pre-Street
View) virtual tour of the Scottish Highlands.
