A haboob (dust storm) blows through Phoenix

This haboob came through Phoenix, AZ on August 19, 1999. Haboobs are giant dust storms 1500-3000 feet high, with rounded leading edges as shown here. The name comes from the word for "wind" in Arabic, "habb". Haboobs occur in two places on Earth -- the Sudan in Africa, and the southwestern US. These pictures were taken in Chandler, AZ over approximately a 5-minute period; this storm was moving about 15-20 miles/hr. Haboobs may look a lot like dust storms on Mars.
