Effects of Solid Disk Mass (Observations)
- Defines how much material is present to build planets.
- Two ways to get variation:
- Metallicity:
- G stars within 15pc have -1.35<[Fe/H]<0.37. (Thevenin catalog)
- factor of 50.
- Stochastic variations:
- Observations of young stars in star-forming regions show a factor of ~30 variation
(e.g. Beckwith & Sargent 1996; Kitamura et al. 2002).
- Combine these and get a variation of a factor of 1500!
