Effects of Solid Disk Mass (Observations)

• Defines how much material is present to build planets.
• Two ways to get variation:
  • Metallicity:
    • G stars within 15pc have -1.35<[Fe/H]<0.37. (Thevenin catalog)
    • factor of 50.
  • Stochastic variations:
    • Observations of young stars in star-forming regions show a factor of ~30 variation
      (e.g. Beckwith & Sargent 1996; Kitamura et al. 2002).
  
• Combine these and get a variation of a factor of 1500!
