The IAU's Definition
A planet is defined as a celestial body that:
- is in orbit around the Sun
- self-gravity overcomes rigid body forces (round)
- has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
Whether you like the wording or not, what they mean is that any non-resonant small body will be removed in during the lifetime of the star:
