Primitive Main Belt Asteroids
- The asteroid belt (AB) shows a wide range chemical compositions.
- Highly processed objects
- Mainly on inside.
- E-types are very dry.
- S-types have been strongly heated.
- Organic-rich objects on outside.
- D- and P-types
- Look like dormant cometary nuclei.
- Has traditionally been interpreted as indicating physical changes in the solar nebula.
- Warm on the inside, cold on the outside.
- With a very fast transition just where we see the AB.
- However, it has recently been argued that Trojans were captured from much farther out
(15-30AU, Morbidelli et al. 2005).
- Could this apply to other primitive objects too?
