CATASTROPHIC DISRUPTION VI (CD-VI) WORKSHOP

We are circulating this notice to get an indication of interest from possible participants in the sixth topical workshop on the process of catastrophic disruption and its role in shaping our solar system. These meetings previously have been 2-3 day, informal workshops on the theme of collisional catastrophic disruption in the solar system.

It has been over 4 years since the last CD workshop which was held at Timberline Lodge, Oregon in June, 1997. Prior workshops were held in Pisa (1984), Belgrade (1987), Kyoto (1990) and Gubbio (1993). Discussion at the Timberline workshop indicated an interest in holding another workshop but the venue/date was left open. Further talks at Asteroids 3 resurrected interest in holding another CD workshop. Two locations are under consideration; the first is in the south of France and would be hosted by Patrick Michel. The second is Mackinac Island, Michigan and Dan Durda would be the local host. Attached is preliminary information on accommodations for both potential locations for CD-VI.

The dates are not yet final but we are looking at June, 2003.

We will try to arrange the conference proceedings to be published as a special issue of a regular journal. The CD-V proceedings were published as a special proceedings of Icarus, while the Gubbio proceedings, were published in Planetary and Space Science.

We will dedicate this meeting to Paolo Farinella, one of the founders of the CD workshops and a tireless worker in this field. We shall miss him sorely.

Please let us know your interest in participating in this workshop by returning the attached questionnaire to the e-mail address: michel@obs-nice.fr

POTENTIAL VENUES FOR CD-VI

1) The French Connection.

I have began my investigations concerning the palaces in Cannes and they'll send me their conditions soon. June is an excellent period for prices in the French Riviera, since people came for the Film Festival in May and holidays really begin in July, so that June is usually very "calm" and Hotels are more flexible.

Just to let you know that my investigation for a Hotel are in progress, I have received the first proposition: from the Hotel Sofitel in Cannes (Web site: http://www.hotels.fr/sofitelcannes/), a 4-star Hotel extremely well-placed in front of the sea, which offers to dispose of 50-70 single rooms with:

- Breakfast (Buffet)
- The seminar room with automatic audio-visual system, retroprojector, screen, paperboard
- Lunch (or Diner) including starter, main course, dessert and drink
- two coffee-breaks with tea, fruit juice and sweet crackers

50% of the rooms have a view on the Sea (and the hotel is at 50 meters of the Sea!). The price per person (can be negociated I'm sure) would be a little less than 200 US dollars per night (including all I mentioned above, with the seminar room, etc ...) for the periods, either 1-4 June, or 9-12 June, or 22-25 June 2003. So there is no additional cost for renting the seminar room, coffee-break, etc .. already accounted for in the price given above.

I have now received answers from many Palaces of Cannes. Looking at the prices (the most important!), at the current US Dollar rate, this is what we can have for one of them, particularly good I think (and this example corresponds to price average for the others). Prices are given here per person and per day:

144 US$ in a single room
90 US$ in a double room

including a breakfast buffet.

Then, there is an extra for seminar facilities of: 46 US$ per day/per person (perhaps to be financed by a sponsor if we can) which includes: a welcome drink, 2 coffee breaks with everything, LUNCH with 3 courses+water+wine+coffee on the beach (!), the seminar room with retroprojector, screen, white board, mineral water on tables. People would be shared in two 4 start Hotel, facing each other at 100 meters of the Croisette and the beach.

There is a web site for the two Hotels, but I have also their documentation in several copies that I can send you.
