This was the first Apollo mission to attempt a landing in less than extremely gentle terrain. Apollo 14 landed in the hills at the northern edge of the crater Fra Mauro, the landing site chosen for the aborted Apollo 13 mission. The goal was to sample material ejected from the great Imbrium Basin 3.85 billion years ago.
