Grading and Policies
Grading Formula:
Homework 40%
Exam 1 15%
Exam 2 15%
Final Exam 20%
Attendance 10%
Grading will be on a curve with a B- average
Homework is handed out in class on Tuesdays and Fridays and is due the following Fridays and Tuesdays, in class. They may also be handed in to Ka Chun Yu's mailbox by 5:00 on the day they are due. After this, there will be a 10% penalty per day for late homework. We will try to have the homework sets graded one week after they are handed out. Solutions will be posted on the Web Page, http://macd28.colorado.edu/Astro one week after they are handed out, so no homework later than this will be accepted.
Please see me or Ka Chun during office hours if you have any questions about the material or problems with the homework. Since the course is very intensive, I urge you to discuss the material with us sooner rather than later. Also because the course is so intensive, please use the posted office hours to talk with Ka Chun and myself, rather than random times.
It is important to do the reading. I will not be able to cover everything in class. Everything counts in this class -- you may be tested on anything discussed during lectures, and anything in the assigned reading. Summaries will be handed out before the tests, and the summaries and concepts sections at the end of the chapters are good places to look. Also, use the glossary and the index at the back of the book. They are very good.
The World Wide Web Page, http://macd28.colorado.edu/Astro is the fundamental source for information on the class, including the syllabus, schedule of activities, outlines of lectures, homework assignments and solutions, and reading assignments. WWW-capable terminals are available in Duane C119 the same floor as the classroom, at the extreme west end of the building. If you need an account or help using the computers, there are advisors available there.
