Using "solar tsunamis" to study the solar corona

June 16, 2003

Department researchers Dr. Meredith Wills-Davey and Dr. Craig DeForest used observations of "solar tsunamis" (large, propagating waves in the solar atmosphere that seem to be associated with coronal mass ejections, or CMEs) to indirectly investigate the corona. Observational data from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft were used to determine crucial properties of the waves as they propagated, which in turn provided clues about the local structure of the solar atmosphere. The detailed investigation of these waves may also aid in understanding the energetics of CMEs.
